The fact that you can use any tank that you like is a huge part of the appeal of owning a mod. Many people even go so far as to begin building their own coils rather than using pre-built coils that screw into tanks. Might you be one of those people? Using a Rebuildable Atomizer Is the Cheapest Way to Vape

One of the greatest aspects of using a rebuildable atomizer is that there is absolutely no cheaper way to vape. If you currently use a tank with pre-built replaceable coils, it’s likely that you spend a minimum of $3.00 for each coil – and some coils cost significantly more than that. If you use an e-liquid from one of the popular mainstream makers – who almost always sweeten their products heavily with sucralose – you’re only getting a day or two of use out of your coils before they start to taste horribly burned. That’s an extremely expensive way to vape.

When you use a rebuildable atomizer, there are only two supplies that you absolutely need: resistance wire and cotton. You can buy kanthal wire in enormous spools, and cosmetic-grade organic cotton is available in huge bags. A small investment can set you up with enough supplies to build a new coil every day for years. Although building a coil will always require a time investment, the materials are practically free on a per-coil basis when you buy them in bulk.

A Rebuildable Atomizer Is Immune From FDA Vaping Regulations

If you live in the United States, one of your biggest challenges as a vaper is the uncertainty of wondering what products will still be available to buy in the future. By September 9, every company manufacturing vaping products for sale in the United States needed to submit an application to the FDA for permission to continue selling those products. Every vaping device, every vape tank, every coil for every vape tank and every e-liquid counts as a separate product and requires its own premarket application – and a single application costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to compile.

Needless to say, most manufacturers of vaping products have not submitted the required paperwork to the FDA. As of right now, though, you’ll have no trouble finding the coils for most vape tanks in ready supply even though many of those coils are now technically illegal to sell. Is the FDA going to start sending warning letters to every seller of every tank and every coil that doesn’t have a corresponding premarket application on file, or will they decide that doing so would require so many resources that it would be virtually impossible to remove every non-compliant product from the market? 

How the FDA will deal with the enormous number of vaping products that lack corresponding premarket applications is presently unknown. The one certain thing, though, is that the FDA doesn’t regulate resistance wire or cotton. No vaping regulation can take those things off of the market, and that’s one of the biggest reasons why it’s in your best interest to own a rebuildable atomizer. If the coils for your favorite tank suddenly become available – even if every coil for every tank suddenly becomes unavailable – you’ll still have the ability to make your own coils.

A Rebuildable Atomizer Can Give You Incredible Vapor Production

A rebuildable atomizer typically has extremely large air vents that facilitate wide-open airflow characteristics. Lack of airflow hampers the vapor production of many vape tanks with pre-made coils, but you won’t have that problem with a rebuildable atomizer – and since a rebuildable atomizer typically has a very generous coil building platform, it’ll allow you to build some fairly elaborate coils.

If you look for pictures of rebuildable atomizer coils online, you’ll see ample evidence of the creativity that people put into their coil designs. Some people prefer simple dual-coil designs, while others connect up to four coils in tandem. Some people twist or braid wires to increase their surface area before wrapping those wires into coils. The end result is that a rebuildable atomizer can give you incredible vapor production – and even if you’re not trying to build coils for cloud chasing, building your own coils still means that you have plenty of room for creativity and experimentation.

Using a Rebuildable Atomizer Is a Lot of Work

Although rebuildable atomizers do have many benefits, owning one also has one major drawback: Building a coil is a lot of work. There are several steps involved in building an atomizer coil from scratch.

  • You’ll cut some wire. If you’re doing a dual-coil build – which is the most common type – you’ll need two lengths of wire. 
  • You’ll twist the wires into coil shapes using a coil winder or drill bit.
  • You’ll attach the wires to your rebuildable atomizer and trim the leads.
  • You’ll check the resistance of the coil before test firing it to remove hot spots.
  • You’ll thread cotton through the coil and wet it thoroughly with e-liquid.

Once you’ve done all of the above, your coil should be ready to use. Even for experienced coil builders, building a new coil from scratch typically takes 20 minutes or more. The first few times that you build coils, it’ll probably feel fairly fun. It’s always exciting to build something from scratch that actually works. After you’ve built new coils for yourself every couple of days for a few months, though, it may start to feel like a tedious grind. That’s the reason why vape tanks are more popular than rebuildable atomizers even if their performance is sometimes inferior. Many people are happy to put up with marginally poorer performance if it means that they don’t have to go through the tedium of coil building.
