Snapchat Notifications

Snapchat’s notification system is a veritable rainbow, with different colors signaling various alerts.

While the green dot might be stealing the spotlight lately, it’s just one hue in Snapchat’s palette of communication:

  • Yellow: New alerts, friend requests, or suggestions

  • Blue: New Chats

  • Purple: New Snaps

  • Red: Unopened Snaps or Chats

These colorful indicators primarily grace the Chat screen, though they occasionally make cameo appearances in Stories.

What is the Green Dot on Snapchat?

Recently, Snapchat introduced a new green dot on the Quick Add page.

This verdant visitor sits next to the Bitmoji of suggested friends, playing the role of an Activity Indicator.

In essence, it’s Snapchat’s way of saying, “Hey, this person’s been active recently!”

But why place it on the Quick Add page? According to My AI, Snapchat’s resident chatbot, this feature aims to encourage more connections by showing potential friends who are online and ready to chat.

It’s a digital “Open for Business” sign, if you will.

Controlling Your Digital Footprint

Not everyone’s comfortable with their online status being broadcast. Luckily, Snapchat gives you the reins to control this feature. Here’s how to disable the Activity Indicator:

  • Tap your Bitmoji icon to open your profile

  • Hit the gear icon to access Settings

  • Under ‘Privacy Controls,’ find ‘Activity Indicator’

  • Toggle it off

Voila! You’ve gone incognito. Remember, though, while others won’t see your activity status, you’ll still spot the green dot for those who keep it enabled.

The Other Green Dot: Your Camera’s Watchful Eye

If you’ve spotted a green dot in the top right corner of your camera screen, don’t panic!

This isn’t a Snapchat feature, but rather a privacy indicator built into iOS and Android operating systems.

It’s there to let you know when an app is using your camera or microphone.

On iPhones, this dot is subtle, resembling a tiny LED light. Android users might notice a larger, more prominent indicator.

This feature was introduced with iOS 14 and Android 12, aimed at boosting user privacy awareness.

When Green Means Go (Away)

While these indicators are designed to enhance privacy, they might feel intrusive to some users.

If you’d rather not see them, you can disable camera and microphone permissions in your phone settings.

Be warned, though: this will significantly limit Snapchat’s functionality.

Disabling the camera will prompt a notification that Snapchat needs camera access to operate, along with instructions on how to re-enable it in settings.

The Bottom Line

Understanding Snapchat’s notification system can enhance your user experience and help you navigate the app more efficiently.

Whether you choose to embrace the green dot or opt for more privacy, remember that these features are designed to make your social media experience more interactive and transparent.

As Snapchat continues to evolve, staying informed about new features and privacy controls is key to making the most of your snapping experience.

Keep your eyes peeled for more colorful updates in the future!
