You take a photo. It looks great on your phone. You send it to a friend, who forwards it to a group chat, where someone screenshots it and posts it somewhere else.
By the time it comes back to you, the picture is soft, blotchy and vaguely smeared around the edges, and nobody did anything wrong.
This is one of the most common frustrations in everyday photo use, and it happens for a reason that becomes obvious once somebody explains it.
Every Save Throws Something Away
Most photos are stored in formats that are lossy, meaning they achieve small file sizes by permanently discarding information the format’s designers judged you were unlikely to notice.
That trade-off is fine once. The problem is that the discarding happens again each time the image is re-saved, and the second round is working on the already-degraded version rather than the original.
Do that half a dozen times and the losses compound into the blotchy patches, halos around edges and muddy colors that characterize an image which has been round the internet a few times. Photographers call this generation loss, and it is the single biggest cause of mysteriously bad photos.
Where the Damage Usually Happens?
Three culprits account for most of it. Messaging apps compress images aggressively before sending, because moving smaller files is faster and cheaper, and many do this by default without asking.
Screenshots are the second, since photographing a photo already displayed on a screen captures a compressed, resized version and then saves that as a new compressed file. Uploading and re-downloading from social platforms is the third, as most re-encode everything on upload.
If you have an image that has been through all three, you are looking at something several generations removed from what the camera originally captured. At that point an image tool from Cloudinary or a similar service can improve the appearance somewhat, though it is worth understanding what such tools actually do before expecting miracles.
Enhancement Is Reconstruction, Not Recovery
This is the part people misunderstand, largely because of how these features are marketed. Software cannot retrieve information that was thrown away, because it no longer exists anywhere in the file.
What modern enhancement does is estimate what was probably there, using patterns learned from very large numbers of other images, and render something plausible in its place. For mild degradation, the estimate is close enough that the result is genuinely better.
For a heavily damaged image, the software is essentially inventing detail, which usually looks sharper while being less faithful to what was actually photographed. Both outcomes are useful in different situations, and knowing which one you are getting matters if the photo is of a person’s face.
Faces are the case where invented detail becomes most noticeable and most uncomfortable, because human perception is extraordinarily tuned to them. An enhanced portrait can end up looking subtly like a different person, with features smoothed or reshaped toward whatever the model considers typical.
For a family photograph that is the only surviving image of someone, that is a meaningful thing to be aware of before replacing the original with the enhanced version.
The Standards Behind the Squeeze
None of this is a flaw in any particular app. The compression behavior is defined by the image formats themselves, which are international standards developed by committees of engineers weighing file size against visible quality.
JPEG, still the most widely used format for photographs, was produced by a joint working group operating under ISO and its partner bodies, and its design deliberately accepts a small amount of permanent quality loss in exchange for a large reduction in file size.
That was an excellent trade in an era of slow connections and small hard drives, and the consequence we live with is that every re-save spends a little more of the image.
How to Send Photos Without Wrecking Them?
The practical fixes are straightforward once you know what causes the problem. Send the original file rather than a forwarded copy, and where a messaging app offers a document or original-quality option, use it, since that generally bypasses the automatic compression.
Avoid screenshotting a photo when you could share the file itself. Keep the originals from your camera or phone somewhere you can find them, and edit copies rather than the originals so you can always go back to the best version you have.
And resist the urge to run a photo through several apps in sequence, because each one is another round of encoding.
When It Genuinely Matters, Skip the Middlemen?
For photographs you actually care about, the safest route is the most boring one: transfer the files directly from the device rather than through a messaging service, use a cloud storage or file transfer service that preserves originals rather than a social platform, and check what you received rather than assuming.
It takes slightly longer and it means the copy you keep is the same quality as the one that was taken. Everything else in this article is about salvaging images that have already been degraded, and while that is often possible to a reasonable standard, it is never as good as not degrading them in the first place.
The habit worth building is simply to treat the file that came off the camera as the master copy and everything afterward as a derivative, which costs nothing and quietly solves most of this.
