If you have a new or unopened item from Home Depot, you can return it within 180 days, unless there are specific exceptions in the Return Policy.
With a receipt, you can choose to exchange the item, get a cash refund, account credit, or Store Credit. Refunds are usually given to the original payment method unless stated otherwise in the exceptions.
If you paid with a gift card or store credit, your refund will be issued as store credit.
Lost Your Home Depot Receipt?
If you don’t have your receipt, don’t worry. Home Depot can often find your purchase in their system. For credit or debit card payments, or check payments, they can locate the receipt within 30 days. For Home Depot credit card purchases, they can find it within 365 days.
A Home Depot employee can look up your purchase for up to 90 days if you used a credit or debit card.
If you paid with cash, you might receive store credit on a Home Depot gift card.
Remember to bring a government-issued photo ID for returns or refunds, as they need it to verify your purchase.

Home Depot Item Return Guide
In-Store Returns
For in-store returns without a receipt or from Store Credits, Home Depot needs a valid driver’s license or government-issued photo ID. A third-party system verifies all refunds, so returns must be approved by this system.
Home Pickup Returns
To return an item via home pickup, contact Home Depot Customer Support at 1-800-430-3376. They will assist you in starting your UPS return and arranging a convenient pickup time for your items.
Design Center Returns
Items purchased at the Home Depot Design Center can be returned there. However, items bought online or at warehouse stores cannot be returned at the Design Center. Items from the Design Center must be returned exclusively at that location.
Home Depot’s 180-Day Return Policy Exceptions
You can return most things you buy at The Home Depot for a full refund within 180 to 365 days, depending on how you paid. However, there are a few exceptions.
30-Day Returns
The items listed below can only be returned within 30 days of purchase:
- Furniture
- Area rugs
- Consumer electronics (including televisions and computers)
- Gas-powered equipment and tractors
- Generators (excluding whole-house and stationary models)
90-Day Returns
Items bought at the Home Depot Design Center, including purchases made with any Home Depot credit account, must be returned within 90 days of purchase.
Major Appliance Return Policy
For defective or damaged major appliances:
- Before accepting delivery or leaving the store, inspect the appliance for any defects or damage.
- If defects or damage are found, refuse the product.
- If the product is accepted or taken from the store, it can still be returned if defects or damage are reported to Home Depot at (800) 455-3869 within 48 hours of delivery or pick-up.
Hazardous Materials Return Policy
For safety reasons, items containing flammable liquids or gases cannot be returned via mail to Home Depot, even if emptied. This includes, but is not limited to, lawn mowers and leaf blowers. These items must be taken back to your local Home Depot store.
Return Policy on Plants
- One-Year Guarantee
Home Depot offers a 1-year guarantee on perennials, trees, and shrubs. If you receive damaged or dead live goods purchased online, such as houseplants, trees, holiday trees, wreaths, or garlands, contact Customer Support at 1-800-430-3376 within 3 days of delivery for a free replacement. This guarantee excludes cut flowers and floral arrangements.
Damaged Orders or Missing Parts
If your order arrives damaged, incomplete, or missing parts, reach out to Home Depot’s Customer Support at 1-800-430-3376 within 30 days of delivery for a solution.
Non-Returnable/Non-Refundable Items
These items cannot be returned or refunded:
- Large household appliances
- Whole-house and stationary generators
- Utility trailers
- Fresh flowers and floral arrangements
- Gift cards and store credits
- Labor, delivery, and installation services
- Customized products
- Product samples (e.g., paint, flooring, fabric, wallpaper)
Blinds: Custom blinds are non-returnable unless labeled “Guaranteed to Fit.” In that case, they can be exchanged within 15 days of receipt. Exchanges are limited to four blinds per household and must be for the same product and color.

Home Depot Design Center: Customized items based on customer specifications cannot be returned.
In-Store Return Rules
- Store Credit or gift card purchases will be refunded as Store Credit. Registration of Store Credit may be required. Bring a valid driver’s license or government-issued photo ID for registration.
- Returns without a receipt may be refunded as Store Credit at the lowest advertised price.
- Cash purchases over $1,000 may be refunded by check from The Home Depot’s corporate office.
- Special Order returns or cancellations may incur a 15% restocking fee and must be returned to the original store of purchase.
