How To Improve PS5 Controller Battery Life?

Michael JenningsBy Michael JenningsJun 18, 2024No Comments4 Mins Read

PS5 Controller Battery Life

The PS5 controller’s battery life isn’t as good as its amazing features. It runs out of power quickly, just like the PS4’s controller did.

This can end your gaming session if you don’t have another controller. It’s frustrating when you’re deeply focused on playing PS5 games and your controller dies.

The battery in the PS5 controller usually lasts for a couple of days before it needs to be charged.

There are a few ways you can try to make the battery last longer, but don’t expect a big improvement. A new controller with a 12-hour battery life is coming soon, which should help. However, even with 12 hours of battery life, you’ll still need to charge it frequently.

How much time does the battery of the PS5 controller work?

The battery life of a controller can vary based on the games you play and your settings. Using wired headphones instead of wireless ones can drain the battery faster.

Controllers that use special features a lot may give you less playtime compared to those that use these features less.

From our tests, a controller typically lasts about six to 12 hours on one charge, though getting 12 hours is rare. Some games give you about six to eight hours of playtime.

When the controller alerts you that the battery is low, you still have plenty of time left before it dies – sometimes up to an hour.

Newer controllers are more durable but don’t necessarily have longer battery life.

What is the duration of the PS5 DualSense Edge battery?

The upgraded PS5 controller doesn’t fix the main issue with the original PlayStation 5 controller. It offers only four to six hours of playtime, which is less than what the standard controller provides. In my review, I pointed out this problem.

It’s disappointing considering the high price. Teardowns reveal that the upgraded controller has a smaller battery to accommodate its advanced features. Despite being more efficient for its size, it still falls short on playtime.

Ways to make the PS5 controller battery last longer

There are various ways to extend the PS5 controller’s battery life or avoid the issue completely.

A straightforward solution is to play with a wired connection. This way, you won’t have to worry about the battery running out. Most gamers enjoy playing on the couch, so this may not be the best choice.

To extend your PS5 controller’s battery life, adjust settings in the PS5 menu. Go to ‘Accessories’ and select ‘Controller (General)’. You can:

  1. Lower speaker volume if you don’t use a headset.
  2. Reduce vibration intensity.
  3. Decrease trigger effect intensity.
  4. Dim controller indicator brightness for minor battery savings.

The DualSense controller behaves differently depending on your profile. If you use the ‘Default’ profile, the vibration strength stays the same. To change settings, switch to one of the three user profiles.

Consider using a wireless headset instead of a wired one if possible. Many top PS5 headsets are wireless. This helps save battery because the controller doesn’t have to power the headset.

Remember to mute the microphone on your PS5 DualSense controller while playing. Keeping it muted saves battery. You’ll see an orange LED light up below the PlayStation button when it’s muted.

To avoid frequent charging, try using a charging station. It can charge two controllers together without needing a USB port. When your controller’s battery is low, you can switch to a fully charged one quickly.

These tips can help extend the battery life of your PS5 DualSense controller, ensuring longer gaming sessions with less interruption.

Battery Performance: PS5 vs. Xbox Controllers

The battery life of the PS5 controller is shorter compared to the Xbox Wireless Controller, which can last up to 40 hours. The Xbox controller uses AA batteries, but you can get a play and charge kit that gives you 30 hours of playtime. This is longer than what the PS5 controller offers.

Battery Performance: PS5 Controller vs. PS4 Controller

The battery life of the newer controller is pretty much the same over the older one. Typically, the older controller lasts four to eight hours per charge, usually closer to four hours.

Depending on the game, the newer controller lasts a bit longer, around six to 12 hours. Generally, it lasts about six to eight hours.

Battery Performance: PS5 Controller vs. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

The PS5 controller’s battery life pales in comparison to others, like those from Nintendo, which can last up to 40 hours on a single charge. These controllers also have a rechargeable battery, making their longer playtime even more impressive.

This stark difference in battery performance underscores a major drawback of the PS5 controller. Many gamers find this frustrating, given the advancements in gaming technology. Therefore, improving the PS5 controller’s battery life is a pressing issue for many users.
