FDM Layer Lines versus Resin Smoothness: Which Suits Tabletop Figurines Better

Michael JenningsBy Michael JenningsAug 4, 2026No Comments4 Mins Read

Every tabletop hobbyist eventually faces the same fork in the road. You want a squad of figures on the table by the weekend, and you have to decide whether a filament printer or a resin machine will serve the model better.

The answer depends less on marketing claims and more on scale, detail density, and what happens once a brush touches the surface.

FDM Layer Lines versus Resin Smoothness Which Suits Tabletop Figurines Better

Choosing a printing method is a bit like choosing where you spend attention for a hobby session. Some people compare an online bitcoin casino the way they compare printer specs, weighing terms carefully and checking local rules first.

The figurine on the workbench is what we are here for, and its surface finish is decided long before paint goes down.

The Surface Question Before Any Paint Goes Down

Layer lines are the horizontal ridges left as a printer builds a model slice by slice. On a fused deposition machine, those lines are visible to the naked eye.

On a resin printer, they shrink to a fraction of that height, which is why resin figures often look almost injection-moulded straight off the plate. The gap between the two methods is real, but it narrows fast once you factor in scale and finishing work.

Scale is the quiet decider. A 75mm display bust shows every ridge. A 28mm skirmish trooper hides a lot, because the eye simply cannot resolve a tenth of a millimetre from across a gaming table. Before you commit to one process, look at the model size you actually play with most.

What Filament Printing Does to Small Detail?

Filament printing has come a long way, and modern nozzles with fine layer heights produce figures that hold up well once primed. The trade-offs are specific rather than general, so it helps to look at facial work and armour separately.

Faces and Fine Edges

Tiny faces are where layer lines complain loudest. Eyes, nostrils, and thin sword edges tend to blur under a 0.1mm layer, and shallow expression lines can flatten out.

A larger heroic scale figure tolerates this far better than a small rank trooper, so many filament users reserve their machine for chunkier sculpts.

Armour Plates and Broad Surfaces

Flat armour and cloaks are the friendly case. Broad panels sand smooth quickly, and a coat of filler primer fills shallow stepping in one pass.

The fused filament fabrication process shines on this kind of geometry, where large readable shapes carry the paint job more than microscopic texture does.

A short finishing routine covers most filament flaws. The steps below run before your first coat of colour.

  • Wet sand raised layer lines on flat panels with fine grit
  • Brush on filler primer and let it cure fully
  • Spot-check faces under angled light for lost detail
  • Re-prime once smooth so paint grips evenly.

The takeaway is simple. Filament rewards patience during prep, and the result on medium and large figures is hard to fault after paint.

Where Resin Smoothness Actually Pays Off?

Resin trades convenience for crispness. The layers are so fine that a well-cured print can go from plate to primer with almost no sanding. That advantage is strongest exactly where filament struggles.

Sculpted Detail at Small Scale

On a 28mm or 32mm figure, resin holds gem facets, chainmail links, and squinting eyes that filament would round off.

The stereolithography family of printers captures this fine relief because each cured layer is measured in microns rather than fractions of a millimetre. For skirmish armies packed with character models, that difference is visible before and after painting.

Durability Once the Game Starts

Smoothness comes with a caveat. Standard hard resins can be brittle, and thin spear shafts or outstretched arms snap if a figure hits the floor.

Tough or ABS-like resin blends soften that risk, and filament figures generally survive knocks better. Weigh how rough your table nights get before you assume finer is safer.

Matching the Method to Scale and Play Style

Matching the Method to Scale and Play Style

The honest recommendation is not one winner but a fit between process and use. A quick side-by-side helps set expectations before you buy filament or resin.

Read the table as a starting map rather than a verdict. A player running large centrepiece models leans filament, while a collector of detailed small troops leans resin, and plenty of hobbyists keep both machines for different jobs.
